Youth Organizing and Art

Public art involving graffiti, stenciling, wheat paste, and public murals flourished in 2006 and after, largely fueled by youth organizing. This section explores youth expression through public art and focuses on the Asamblea de Artistas Revolutionarios de Oaxaca (Assembly of Revolutionary Artists of Oaxaca, ASARO), which was founded in 2006. Youth art organizations helped to solidify politically and visually (through their art) the hybrid identify of Oaxaca popular, which arose during the social movement of 2006. The fusion of urban popular culture with indigeneity and working-class identity anchored in assertions of human dignity from below produced a unique political identity that created unity out of difference in 2006 and after.
